Our Trees

Provenance

We collect seed locally when available. UK and Western European Provenance is used when local trees fail to seed. Customers own seed is grown on request and we will obtain specific provenance seed if required and subject to availability.

Taking care of your trees

Your trees will be packed in labelled plastic plant bags with five or ten plants in each bag. These bags protect the plants and facilitate planting and checking your order. To store, simply place the bags upright in a shady frost free place and check the occasionally to ensure that they remain moist but not water-logged.

"extending the planting season to 6-7 months from early Autumn to late Spring is one of the major benefits of cell grown trees"

Cell grown plants

The seeds are sown in cells which are specially designed to prevellt root spiralling. The tap root is pruned to encourage a dense growth of root within the cell producing a firm root mass that will not break up on transplanting. This prevents the loss of root hairs and damage to the associated mycorrhizae which help in the uptake of water.

Peat free composts, based on forest waste, are used in the cells together with a slow release fertiliser giving vigorous growth in the Nursery and in the first months after transplanting.

The size of Cell Grown Trees vary with species but are typically 20 to 80cm high. Larger sizes are available on request.

Vigour of youth; Cell Grown Trees are ready for transplanting as seedlings or in the year following.

How to plant your trees

Planting cell grown trees is made easier by the compact root plug. The relatively small hole required is quick and easy to make. Ensure that the top of the root plug is below the surface (2cm) and there is no air gap below the root.

Planting your trees for.......

Small woodland and shelter belts:
Planting at 2m intervals requires 2,500 trees/ha. We will be happy to help in the selection of the trees and shrubs to achieve a balance of plants that are suitable for your site and purpose.

Hedging:
The suggested minimum planting for a hedge is 4 plants per mitre and can be made up of a single species or a mixture that blends with the trees in your area. We can help you select a mixture, tailored to your site and personal taste. The mixtures are packed and labelled in such a way as to make for a trouble free planting.
