Description

The black poplar is one of the rarest and most endangered species of tree.
A fast growing bushy tree with rough, dark grey bark, downy young shoots and heard-shaped leaves.
Male and female catkins are found on separate trees which open before the leaves.
Mature trees develop a large, round head which suits the natural landscape of the UK.

Growing Conditions:
Grow in moist but well-drained, humus-rich, fertile soils but avoid planting in vicinity of buildings due to vigorous root system.

Value To Wildlife:
Food source many moth caterpillars including the hornet, wood leopard, poplar hawk and figure of eight. Catkins are beneficial to bees and other insects, and seeds are eaten by birds.

Important Note:
You’ll receive a 2 year old well established whip that’s between 20 to 60cm in height.
This is a deciduous tree and so will shed its leaves in autumn, in order to protect itself from the cold winter weather. Come spring, it’ll burst back into bud and begin to flourish once more.
